【副】(φ比較)

1[通例主語修飾(主語は複数)；be動詞・助動詞の後, 一般動詞の前で] それぞれ, 各々‖Those flowers cost 10p 〜. その花は1本10ペンスだ(＝Each of those flowers costs 10p.)《◆はっきりした金額や量をいう場合 each はしばしば文末に置かれる》/They 〜 have [^×has] their own room. 彼らはそれぞれ自分の部屋を持っている(cf. Each of them has their own room.)( →[語法](2)).

2[目的語修飾, 目的語の後で] それぞれ, 各々‖I sent them 〜 a present. 彼らにそれぞれプレゼントを贈った(＝I sent each of them a present.)《◆^×I sent them a present 〜. は不可》.

[語法] (1)通例 each だけでは直接目的語の後にはこない：^×I kissed them 〜. (cf. I kissed them 〜 on the forehead. 1人ずつ彼らのひたいにキスした). ただし, SVOO の場合で直接目的語の数量がはっきりしているときは可： I gave them an egg . 彼らに卵を1個ずつ与えた(cf. ^×I gave them eggs 〜.). (2)【副】1第2例のように複数主語の後にくる場合は each は副詞なので, 動詞は複数主語に呼応する. (3)単独で用いられるのは, その対象が既知なときに限られる： I met them and shook hands 〜. 彼らに会ってめいめいに握手をした. cf. ^×I went into the room and shook hands 〜. (4)[A and B each と数] 複数扱いが普通： My brother and sister 〜 give freely to charity. (私の兄も姉もそれぞれ気前よく慈善事業に寄付する). ただし A, B を個々に見る気持が強いときは単数扱い： The rural south and the industrial north 〜 has its attraction for the tourist. 農村地帯の南部と工業地帯である北部は, それぞれ観光客を引きつける魅力を備えている.
