[語法] (1)each other は「お互いに」と訳すが, 英語では副詞ではなく代名詞なので, 他動詞・前置詞の目的語として用いる： They smled at ther. 彼らはほほえみ合った《◆^×They smiled 〜 other. は不可》/They tlked with ther. 彼らは話し合った《◆(1)^×They talked 〜 other. は不可. (2)with でなく between, among ならば再帰形を用いる： They talked between themselves.》. (2)each other を主語に用いることがあるが((非標準))： We know what 〜 other wants. 我々はお互い何が欲しいか知っている(＝We know what we each want [each of us wants]. / We ach know [Each of us knows] what the ther wants.). この場合, each other は単数扱いが原則だが, 意味的には複数概念を表すので特に((非標準))ではしばしば複数扱いをする： At least me and you have been friends since kindergarten, and we know how each other are. 少なくとも俺とおまえとは幼稚園から友だちだ. お互いがどんなかわかっている《◆この例の me and you にも注意》. (3)次例の one another には「相互」の意がないので, each other と交換できない： The floats in the procession followed one another in quick succession. 行列の山車(だし)は途切れず次々に続いた《◆山車は前に向かって一方向に進むので相互的でない》.
