[語法][a number of] (1)「多数の」, 「若干の」のいずれの意味かは前後の文脈によるが, ((米))では「多くの」の意に用いるのが普通. いずれの場合も否定文・疑問文には用いられない. (2)数を明示する時には a large [great, good] 〜 of boys 「多くの少年」, a certain 〜 of people 「いくらかの人々」, a small 〜 of mistakes 「少数の誤り」のようにする：^×a many [big] 〜 of boys, ^×a few [little] 〜 of mistakes は誤り；large 〜s of boys 「多くの少年」と表現するときもある. (3)「多量の」では a good [great] deal of ( →deal^１)を用いる. (4)of 句は省略可：The children were invited to the party and a 〜 came. 子供たちがパーティーに招待されて, 何人かがやって来た.
