【語法】 (1) 次のように "but＋(代)名詞" が文尾にくる場合, 今日では, but のあとに主格 (I) よりも目的格 (me) を用いる方が普通 (cf. conj. 3 a): They are all gone 〜 me. 私のほか皆行ってしまった.　(2) but の目的語として to 不定詞や原形不定詞が用いられることがある: Nothing remains 〜 to die. 死ぬよりほかにはどんな手段も残っていない / I'll do anything 〜 apologize. 絶対に謝らない / She does nothing 〜 cry. 彼女はただ泣くばかりだ / What could he do 〜 die? 死ぬ以外にどうすることができただろうか / cannot 〜 do ⇒can^１ 6 / ⇒cannot CHOOSE but (do).
