・I listened but could not [couldn't] hear any sound. 耳をすましたけれどもなんの音も聞こえなかった.

・I could see the mountain in the distance. 遠くの方にその山が見えた.　★この場合単に I saw と言っても事実に変わりはないが I could see と言えば暗に「見ようとして努力した」ことを表す.

2 [過去における可能性].

・I could go for a walk whenever I wanted to. 私は好きなときに散歩することができた.

・He could be combative on occasion. 彼は時として好戦的になることがあった.

・I couldn't catch the bus. そのバスに乗れなかった.

★肯定文では習慣的意味にしか用いない.

3 [過去における許可].

・As he was an old friend of the family, he could come and go whenever he liked. 彼はその家の古い知り合いだったので好きなときに来て好きなときに帰ってよかった.
