・I fear(that) we are too late. もう間に合いそうもない.

・You are ill, I fear. 君はどうもからだの具合が悪いようだ.

・Is he angry?―I fear so. 彼は怒っているのか―そうらしい.

・Will he get better?―I fear not. 彼はよくなるだろうか―だめらしい《★この意味では 《口語》 では fear よりも am afraid が好まれる; cf. I hope》.
