【語法】 (1) かつては a half dozen, a half hour 式の語順が上品な表現と考えられていたが, 現在では half a dozen, half an hour との間にはほとんど差はなくなっている. 半分の数量を 1 単位と見る場合には half-hour, half-inch, half-pine のように 1 語で書かれることもある.　(2) half に the またはその他の限定語のついた名詞が続く場合, half を n. とする half of the people, half of my time 式の言い方と, half を adj. とする half the people, half my time 式の言い方とがある; 前者は全体の一部を指す意識の強いときに用いられ, 後者は全体があまり意識されていないときに用いられる.　(3) half, half of が主語の場合には, 続く名詞の数によって動詞の単複が決まる: Half of the book is…; Half of the books are…. たいていの場合, of は随意である: Give him half (of) the eggs.
