★このような否定構文で than のあとに用いた can help は意味上 ＝cannot help である.

b [cannot 〜 doing として] 禁じる, 止める (stop).

・I could not help laughing. 笑わないわけにはいかなかった, 笑わずにはいられなかった.

★《俗》 では I could not 〜 but laugh. ともいう (cf. I could not but laugh).

vi.

1 助ける, 手伝う.

・be ready to help 進んで手伝う.

・help with charity work 慈善活動を手伝う.

2 役に立つ, 足しになる.

・Every little [《英》 little bit] helps. 《諺》 いくら少しでも何かの足しにはなる, 小さなものがいちいち役に立つ.

・That does not help much. それは大して役に立たない.
