1 利益を得る, もうける.

・profit by [over, at] transaction 取引でもうける.

2 〔…で〕得をする, 利する 〔by, from, out of〕 《★by のほうが普通》; 役立つ.

・You may profit by [from] the experience of others. 他人の経験によって[から]学ぶことができる.

・I profited by his confusion to make my escape. 彼が慌てているすきに逃げた.

・It profits little to do… …しても得をするところはほとんどない.

3 《廃》 上達する, 進歩する.

vt. …の利益[ため]になる, 益する (benefit).

・All his wealth didn't profit him. 全財産は彼には何のためにもならなかった.

・It will not profit him to act thus. そういう行動は彼のためになるまい.
