【語法】 (1) 意味を強調するためにはしばしば 'the very same', 'one and the same' を用いる (cf. selfsame): Mark Twain and Samuel Clemens were one and the 〜 person. マークトウェインとサミュエルクレメンズは全くの同一人物だった.　(2) this, that, these, those などに付けて強調または対照を示すために用いられる (cf. adj. 3): I happened to be absent last Monday, and that 〜 day the school burned down. たまたま先週の月曜日は欠席したが, その当日学校は焼けてしまった.　(3) as, that, who(m), when, where などと相関的にも用いられる: the 〜 umbrella (as, which, that) I lost なくしたのと同じ傘(_か_さ) 《同種の場合も同一の場合もありうる》 / I have the 〜 watch (as, that) you have [as yours]. 君と同じ時計を持っている / I'm the 〜 age as you (are). 君と同じ年だ / Is this the 〜 one (that) you showed me before? これは君が以前見せてくれたのと同じものですか / He is the 〜 person who [that] was here yesterday. 昨日来たのと同じ人だ / I spoke to him for the 〜 reason (that) I spoke to you. 私はあなたと話したのと同じ理由で彼に話した / I put it back to the 〜 place (where, that) I had found it. それを元の所へ戻しておいた.　(4) 従属節で動詞が省かれると as が用いられる: feel the 〜 way towards [about] a person as before 人に対して以前と同じように感じる / I read the 〜 book as you. 君と同じ本を読んだ / He gave the 〜 answer as before. 彼は前と同じ返事をした / Do it the 〜 way as me [I do]. 私と同じようにしなさい / He's going the 〜 way as his father, alas! ああ, 彼は父と同じ道をたどっている.
