・He looked as if he could stand a drink. 《口語》 一杯引っかけても悪くないといった顔をした.

★次のように肉体的苦痛を対象とする場合には肯定構文にも用いられるが, その場合には endure, withstand のほうが普通: His service in India had trained him to 〜 heat better than cold. インド勤務したおかげで彼は寒さよりも暑さに耐えうるように鍛えられていた.
