【語法】 (1) 《口語》では文の中間に用いられる目的語節・補語節などを導く that はしばしば省略される.　(2) しばしば主語としての that-clause が should を伴って判断の基準となる事柄を表すことがある (cf. 6): It is right [wrong] 〜 you should do so. 君がそうするのは当然だ[間違っている] / It is impossible 〜 he should have made [has made] such a mistake. 彼がそんな誤ちをしたとは考えられないことだ / That humans (should) do such things is a scandal. 人間がそんなことをするなどということは恥さらしだ.　(3) 前項の that-clause が独立して詠嘆的な意味の省略構文を成すことがある: That it should ever come [has come] to this! こんな体(_て_い)たらくになるなんて / That a brother should be so perfidious! 血を分けた兄弟がかくも不信であるとは (Shak., Tempest 1. 2. 67-68).　(4) 意欲動詞 (demand, insist, order, propose, recommend, suggest など)の目的語節としては, "should＋原形" か, または特に《米》では(今では《英》でも), 仮定法現在形の動詞, 《英》では直説法の動詞を含む that-clause が用いられる: We proposed to him 〜 he admit [should admit, 《英》 admitted] all applicants. 彼に申込者を全員受け入れるように提案した《★否定の not が加わる場合は次の形をとる: We proposed to him 〜 he not admit [should not admit, 《英》 didn't admit] all applicants.》 / He suggested 〜 the railroad be [should be] improved. 鉄道を改良すべきだと提議した.
