1 起き[立ち]上がる (get up).

・The army ups and marches to the town. 軍隊は立ち上がりその町に進軍する.

2 [通例 up and… として] 《口語》 突然[不意に]…し始める.

・He ups and says….

・He upped and flew at me. やにわに立って私に飛びかかって来た.

★この up はしばしば無変化のまま過去形としても用いられる: He up and hit me. 出し抜けに立ち上がって私を打った.

3 上る, 昇る (ascend).

・A chimney sweeper ups and downs in a chimney. 煙突掃除夫は煙突の中を上り下りする.

・He upped with his fist [stick]. 彼はこぶし[ステッキ]を振り上げた.
