[語法] (1)be の代りに動詞も可： She can't know anything that would help you. She has been unconscious all day. 君の有利になることを彼女は知っているはずがない. 一日中意識を失っていたのだから. (2)また進行形も可；He can't be working at this hour. こんな時間に働いているはずがない. (3)未来に対する推量は進行形が普通：They can't be coming tomorrow.明日来るはずがない(cf. They couldn't come tomorrow.). (4)この意味では堅い書き言葉でも cannot のほか can't も用いられる. not 以外に hardly や never も用いられる.6も同じ. (5)疑問文は不可：^×Can't the rumor be true? (6)can't の代りに((主に米))では must not / mustn't を用いることもある. →must 3 [語法](3).
