[語法] (1)主に商業文・専門書などで用い, それ以外では etc. の代りに and so on [forth], and the rest [the like] と書くことが多い. (2)前にコンマをつけ, et が and に相当するので and は用いない. 前が1語だけの時はコンマは不要： I like apples, oranges, etc. リンゴ, オレンジなどが好きだ《◆会話では... and other fruit(s). が普通》/The size 〜 are [^×is] not important. 大きさなどは重要ではない. (3)etc, etc. 「などなど」のように重ねるのは((略式))：He complained how boring the party was, how bad the food tasted, etc, etc. 彼はパーティーがなんとつまらなかったか, 食物がなんとまずかったかなどなどグチをこぼした. (4)Yours etc. は親友間の手紙の結びの言葉. (5)etc. と such as [such ... as] との併用は避ける.
