[語法]
(1)「ほとんどない」の意味の few は堅い感じがするので話し言葉では few よりも not many, hardly any が好まれる： He does not have many friends. 《◆He has 〜 friends. ももちろん可》. ただし, very few の連語は普通： He has v

(2)a few が限定されたものをさす場合は the few や my few などにする. the [my] few が「ほとんどない」の意味を表すことはない( →【代】 3[語法])： The 〜 countries I have visited are in terrible condition with regard to their educational system. 私が訪れたいくつかの国では教育制度がひどい状態だった.
(3)他の形容詞と共に用いるときは数詞と同様に形容詞の前に置く： (a) 〜 bright students.
(4)number と共には用いられない. small を用いる： a small [×few] number of people 少数の人 / The number of people invited to the party was small [×few]. パーティーに招待された人はごく少数だった.
