[語法] (1)[half of と half] the, this, one's などのついた名詞句が後にくる場合は両者とも可だが, 後者が普通. この場合形容詞( →【形】 1)： 〜 (of) this apple [these apples] / 〜 (of) my friends. 代名詞を従える場合は of の省略不可： 〜 of them [us] / ^×〜 them [us]. 数量を表す不定の名詞句を従える場合は常に half a mile [a dozen] のようにいい, ^×half of a mile [a dozen] とはいわない. (2)[half と the half] 単に「半分」は half で ^×the half は不可： I gave him 〜. 前に other などが付けば the が必要： the other 〜 / ^×other 〜 / the larger 〜 of a pie パイの大きい方の半分.
