[語法]代名詞は John → he のように前方照応的に用いるのが普通であるが, he → John の後方照応も可： After he woke up, John went to town. 目が覚めてからジョンは町へ行った(＝After John woke up, he went to town.)《◆he か John のいずれかに対照強勢を置くと he と John は別の人物をさす》. 従節が後に来る場合後方照応は不可：^×He went to town after John woke up. (he ＝John の場合) / John went to town after he woke up. 以上のことは she, they, it にもいえる.
