[語法][of と 's] 原則として of は無生物, 's は生物について用いる. ただし次の場合は無生物でもしばしば 's が用いられる. 特に新聞英語では多用される. (1)時： today's menu [paper] きょうのメニュー[新聞]/ a ten hours' delay 10時間の遅れ(＝a ten-hour delay). (2)人間の集団： the government's policy 政府の政策 / the committee's report 委員会の報告. (3)場所や制度： Japan's climate 日本の気候 / the school's history 学校の歴史. (4)人間の活動： the plan's importance その計画の重要性 / the game's history 試合の歴史 / the report's conclusions その報告の結論. (5)乗物： the yacht's mast ヨットのマスト《◆the doctor's house は a house of the doctor's と言い換えられるが, (1)-(5)は後者の形は不可：^×a plane of the government's →1a, →b》.
