[語法]
(1)前出の名詞が
の場合, one の使用は不可： He prefers Dutch cheese to Danish (cheese). 彼はデンマークチーズよりオランダチーズが好きだ. ×Danish one としない.
(2)前出の名詞が a pair of shoes などの場合, one は不可： This pair of shoes has worn out and I have to buy a new pair [×a new one]. この靴はすり切れたので新しいのを1足買わねばならない.
(3)[one の省略] 2つの形容詞が比較・対照されて用いられる時および these, those, the +最上級, the +比較級の直後には one, ones を用いないことが多い： They buy Japanese rather than foreign cars. 彼らは外車よりむしろ日本の車を買う《◆... Japanese cars rather than foreign 〜s. よりも((正式))》/Do you like these flowers or those (ones)? こちらの花がお好きですか, それともそちらのですか《◆(1)ones のない方が堅い言い方. (2) those の後に形容詞があれば ones は省略できない：... those red ones?》/I bought the more expensive (one) of the two. 2つのうち高い方を買った.
