[語法][sure と certain] (1)確かな証拠や根拠に基づく確信を表す certain に対し, sure は主観的な判断に基づく確信を表す《◆3も関連する》. ただし否定文ではその差はあまり意識されない： I'm not sure [certain] that's a good idea. それはどうもいい考えとはいえません / She is sure [certain] to come to the party. 彼女はきっとパーティーにやって来る. (2)It is ... that の構文では certain は可だが sure は不可： It is certain [^×sure] that he will come. (3)話し言葉では sure は certain より弱く響くことがある.
