【接】

1[時] …する時(に)(when)；する間, …しながら(while)‖As I entered the room, they applauded. 私が部屋へ入っていったとき, 彼らは拍手をした《◆while I was entering ... の意に近く, まだ完全に部屋に入っていなくともよい. When I entered ... だと, 部屋に入る行為が完了したことになる》/I saw him as he was coming out of the house. 彼が家から出てくるのが見えた《◆I saw him coming ... とほぼ同じ意味》.

[語法] (1)as は2つの出来事をほぼ同時に生じたものとして表現するので, 次のように2つの出来事が独立性を持つ場合, when は as と交換できない： I'll call you when I've finished the work. 仕事を終えたらお電話します / When I arrived at the station, the train had already left. 駅に着いたら列車はもう出てしまっていた. (2)主節が状態を述べている場合は, as ではなく when を用いる‖When [^×As] I decided to learn English, I didn't know how difficult it would be. 英語を勉強しようと決めたとき, 私はそれがどれほど困難なものになるのかわからなかった. 同時性をさらに強調するには, just as ..., as soon as ... を用いる. (3)as 節の動詞は通例動詞.
