a[S could do] かもしれない(well)《◆形は過去形だが現在時または未来に対する推量を表す. 話し手の確信度については →might^１ 1；「…でないかもしれない」は may [might] not do で表す》‖Health care could become America's No.1 industry. 医療が米国のNo.1産業になることも考えられる/Could it be true? それはいったい本当でしょうか《◆()では単なる疑問, ()では疑念を表す》/Once a new contractor is found, the project could be finished in three weeks. 新しい請負業者が見つかれば, 事業は3週間で完成できるだろう.

b[S could have done] …だったかもしれない《◆現在・当時から見た過去の推量》；(…までに)…してしまっているかもしれない《◆未来完了の推量》.[語法] (1)これらの意味は may, might でも同様に表すことができるが, can では不可. (2)「…でなかった[しなかった]かもしれない」は may [might] not have done で表す‖The answer could have been right. 答は正しかったかもしれない(＝It is possible that the answer was right.)/Could she have missed her train? 彼女が電車に乗り遅れたなんてことはありうるだろうか/“You figured the blow could have killed him?”“Could have.
