1[方向]

a…の方へ[に], …に向かって‖turn to the left 左側へ曲る/point to the door ドアの方を指す/on one's way to school 学校へ行く途中, 登校中に/Scotland lies [is] to the north of England. スコットランドはイングランドの北隣にある《◆次のように隣接していない場合にも用いる：Hokkaido lies [is] to the north of Honshu. 北海道は本州の北に位置している》.

b[比喩的に] …の方へ[に]‖He tends to laziness. 彼は怠惰に走りがちだ.

[語法] to も at も方向を示すが, at には「…を目がけて」の意が含意される： This will ensure that you are speaking to your listeners and not at them. このことから(スピーチでは)聴衆に話しかけるのであって聴衆に対して口をきくのでないことがわかる.
