【語法】 (1) 場所の意を示す there (⇒B 1) と併用することもある: There is a shrine there. そこに神社がある.　(2) There is [was] …の構文で時に名詞に特定のものが用いられるが, それは既知のものに注意を喚起して問題の確認とか例挙・例示などをする場合, またはこの構文を用いた質問に対して答える場合である: And there are the children (to consider). それに子供のことがある / Finally, there's the question of getting the money. 最後にその金を手に入れるという問題がある / Who can we ask?―There's John, or Tom, or Mary. / Is there anyone coming?―Yes, there's John.
