(un・der・stood /-std/, 《古》 〜・ed) vt. 1 〈人の言うことを〉理解する, 了解する, …がわかる (comprehend). ・Do you understand German? ドイツ語がおわかりになりますか. ・Do you understand me? 私の言うことがわかりますか. ・I can't understand a word (of it). 一言もわからない. ・Please understand me, I absolutely refuse. いいですか, 絶対にお断りです. ・Now understand me! おいよく聞きたまえ《しばしば驚き・警告などを表す》. ・a democratic regime as we understand it われわれの考える[われわれのいわゆる]民主主義体制. ・a tongue not understanded of the people ⇒tongue 2 a. ・Understandest thou what thou readest? なんじその読むところを悟るか (Acts 8: 30). 【日英比較】 相手の言うことなどについて「理解する, わかる」という意味では英語の "understand" と日本語の「理解する, わかる」との間に大きな差はない. しかし「雨が降るかどうかわからない」というような場合には英語では "understand" は使えない. 日本語の「わかる」は元来「分かれる」と同語源で, 区別や差別がはっきりするということから「理解する」という意味になったのであるが, 英語の "understand" には日本語のように「区別をつける, 判断する」という意味がない (⇒ 語源欄). したがってこのような場合に英語では「私はそのような情報や知識は持ち合わせていない」という発想から "I don't know" などを用いるのが普通である. 2a 〈真意・理由などを〉のみ込む, 会得する; 〈学問・技術など〉に通じている, …に明るい; …のこつ[扱い方]を心得ている. ・understand machinery 機械に明るい. ・understand children [horses] 子供[馬]の扱い方を心得ている. ・I do not understand why he came. 彼がなぜ来たのかわからない. ・I can't understand him [his] leaving so early. 彼がこんなに早く立つわけがわからない《★his のほうが改まった言い方》. ・Did you understand the point of his remark? 彼の言うことの要点が理解できましたか. ・Her conduct [She] is hard to understand. 彼女がなぜあんなことをするのか理解に苦しむ[彼女は理解しにくい]. b 〈人の行動・気持ちなどを〉理解する, 〈人・人の意向などを〉同情的に理解する, 察知する. ・Nobody really understands me. だれも私のこと[気持ち]を本当にわかってくれない. ・He's coming to study here.―So I understand. 彼はここに勉強に来るよ―そうですってね. ・Try and understand my difficulties. 私の困難を察して下さい. ・⇒UNDERSTAND each other. 3 [that-clause を伴って] 聞いて知っている, 聞き及ぶ (learn). ・We understand (from an authoritative source) that the measure is to be dropped.
