unless, if not には, 次のような相違がある: (1) 「B という邪魔がなければ A が起こるだろう」という意味では, 両者が使える: I'll come back if there's not a plane strike [unless there's a plane strike]. 飛行機のストがなければ帰ってくる.　(2) 「B が起こらなければ A が起こるだろう」という意味では, if not しか使えない: I'll feel much happier if she doesn't come with us [unless she comes with us]. 彼女が一緒に来なければずっとうれしいだろう.　(3) unless は肯定の, if not は否定の文脈を構成する: I won't phone you unless something [if nothing] unforeseen happens. 予期しないことが起こらない限り電話しない.　(4) unless は if と異なり事実に反する条件節には生じない: If he weren't [Unless he were] so silly, he would understand. あんなにばかでなければ, わかってくれるのだが.
