3a [形容詞・p.p. 形・doing などを補語として] 〈人・物が〉〈ある状態に〉置かれている, ある, いる (remain).

・lie helpless 手も足も出ない.

・lie still 静かである.

・The field was lying fallow. その畑は休閑中だった.

・The machine has lain idle many years. 機械は何年も使われないままになっている.

・The goods lay rotting [covered with dust, gathering dust] in the warehouse. 商品は腐敗するのにまかせて[ほこりをかぶったまま, ほこりがたまったまま]倉庫に入れられていた.

・lie in prison 獄につながれている.

・lie in ruins 〈建物などが〉廃墟となっている; 〈政策・計画などが〉瓦解(_がかい)している, 無残に砕け散っている.

・lie at the mercy of… …の思うままになっている (cf. at the MERCY of).
