[語法] (1)同じように用いられる形容詞・分詞は ablebodied, brave, dead, deaf, disabled, dumb, elderly, guilty, homeless, injured, innocent, living, old, poor, rich, sick, unemployed, wealthy, wise, wounded, young など. 叙述用法にのみ用いられる形容詞にはこの用法はない：^×the asleep, ^×the glad, ^×the present《◆「出席者全員」の意味にも「現在の人々」の意味にもならない》. また次のような形容詞にもこの用法はない：^×the happy, ^×the foreign, ^×the disgusting. (2)the accused (被告), the deceased (故人), the pursued (追跡されている人)はしばしば単数の人を表す： Talk of the absent and he'll appear. ((ことわざ))うわさをすれば影. (3)国籍を表す形容詞で, -sh, -ch で終る British, English, Irish, Spanish, Welsh；Dutch, French などは the をつけて国民全体を表し, 複数扱いとなる. ただし, 対応する名詞があるときは, 「the+形容詞」は普通用いられない：the Danes [^×Danish](デンマーク人) / the Turks [^×Turkish]( →Japanese [語法]). (4)対句の形をとる成句的な(both) young and old などでは the は省略されることが多い：rich and poor 金持と貧乏人 / dead and dying 死者と死にかけている人たち. その他 many, more や人称代名詞の所有格で修飾されるときも同様；There are more unemployed than ever before. これほど失業者の多いことはこれまでなかった. (5)修飾語(句)を伴うことも可： the young at heart 心の若い人 / the really selfish 本当に利己的な人々. (6)形容詞の比較級・最上級にもつく：the poorest of the poor 貧乏のどん底にいる人々 / the richer than herself 彼女よりも金持の人々. (7)所有格は不可：^×the poor's children→the poor people's children / the children of the poor 貧乏人の子供.
