[語法] (1)この there は単にものの存在を表すだけで, 場所の観念がなく, 形式的な主語の役割を果している. したがって, 疑問文( →a第4例)だけでなく次のように付加疑問や不定詞・分詞・動名詞の形式上の主語にも用いられる： T〜 was one more pupil, wasn't 〜? もうひとり生徒がいたね / I expect 〜 to be room for improvement. 改良の余地があると思う《◆この文は T〜 is room for improvement. という文を expect の目的語として埋め込んでできた文》 / I think it's a pity for 〜 to be any disagreement between us. 我々の間に意見の相違があるのは残念なことだと思う / T〜 being no rain, the ground was hard. 雨が降っていないので地面は堅かった(＝As 〜 was no rain, ...) / T〜 is no possibility of 〜 being another volcanic eruption. 火山がもう一度爆発する可能性はない(＝T〜 is no possibility that 〜 will be another volcanic eruption.)《◆2番目の there が動名詞の主語になっている》/ I want 〜 to be no errors. 誤りのないことを願っている(＝I hope that 〜 is ...) / The FBI believe there to be several terrorists involved in the bombing. FBIはその爆破事件には数人のテロリストが関っていると思っている《◆受身 There are believed to be...も可；there は to be の形式上の主語》. (2)この構文は不定のものに用い, 特定のものには用いない( →1 [語法](4))：^×T〜 is the cat in the kitchen. 《◆The cat is in the kitchen. とする》.ただし, the が付いても, of 句や that 節によって限定されたり, 物事を列挙したりする場合はこの限りでない： T〜 is the problem of race in America. アメリカには人種という問題がある《◆the は of 句によって限定されることから生じた後方照応の the》；アメリカには, たとえば, 人種問題がある《◆列挙の there 構文ともとれる》/“What's worth visiting there?”“Well, 〜's the park, the castle and the museum.”「その土地で訪れてみる価値のあるところはどんなところですか」「そうですね, 公園, 城, 博物館といったところです」《◆主語が複数でも((略式))では There's も可》/“Who might be able to help?”“There's Bill.”「だれか助けてくれる人いるかしら」「ビルに当ってみたら」《◆上記2例は列挙の there 構文》. (3)there is S の後に現在[過去]分詞や一時的な状態を示す形容詞(available, present, free)を伴うことがある： T〜 are three people working there. そこでは3人が働いている《◆^×T〜 are working three people there. は不可；Three people work [are working] there. は可》 / T〜 were two prisoners being tortured. 2人の囚人が拷問を受けていた / There's a credit card gone from my wallet. 私の札入れからクレジットカードがなくなっている / T〜 were many students present [ill]. 多くの学生が出席していた[病気であった]. (4)((略式))では複数の語がきてもしばしば単数で受ける. この場合必ず there's となる： There's a book, a notebook, and a ball-point pen on the table. テーブルの上に本, ノートそれにボールペンがある《◆このように単数名詞を列挙する場合に多い》 / There's 14 million titles to choose from. (このウェブサイトには)選ぶべき本は1400万冊もあります. (5)there の省略： Across the street (〜) is a post office. 通りの向う側に郵便局がある. there のある文は存在を示す普通の文であるが, there を省略した文は眼前の事実として「ごらんの通り」という意を含む.
