[語法] (1)ago は「(今から)…前(の時点で)」の意味であるから動詞の時制は原則として単純過去形であり, 現在完了形と共には用いない： I saw [^×have seen] him an hour 〜. 1時間前に彼と会った(cf. He must have died years ago. 彼はきっと何年も前に亡くなったのでしょう(＝It is certain that he died years ago.)). ただし((英))では ages ago, years ago は現在完了と共に用いられることもある. また, since ... ago の副詞句を伴う場合は since によって完了形が可能だが避ける人も多い( →since 【前】)： I haven't bought any food since two weeks ago. 2週間前から食物は何も買っていない. (2)過去完了には before が原則だが, 文学作品などではしばしば登場人物でなく作者自身の目から時間をとらえるので ago もごく普通： She was thinner than she had been three weeks 〜. 彼女は3週間前よりもやつれていた. (3)間接話法では ago を before に変えるのが原則であるが, 今日[今月, 今年]言ったことを今日[今月, 今年]伝える場合には ago も用いられる： He said this morning, “I went sightseeing in Europe three years 〜.”＝He said this morning that he had gone sightseeing in Europe three years 〜. 「3年前にヨーロッパへ観光に出かけました」と彼はけさ言った( →before 【副】). (4)^×It is ten years 〜 since he wrote the novel. (彼がその小説を書いてから10年になる)のように ago を since の前に用いるのは不可. It is [has been] ten years since he wrote the novel. / It was ten years 〜 that [when] he wrote the novel. / He wrote the novel ten years 〜. などとする. (5)「10年前の新聞」を a paper ten years 〜 の代りに a paper of ten years 〜 とするのを不可とする学者もあるが, この表現は文法的にも正しく日常的にもよく用いられる( →of^１, →3b [語法]). (6)ago は単独で用いないので, 「(漠然と)以前に」の意では before： I met her before.
