[語法] (1)文中位が普通《◆その位置は often, seldom などと同じ. →often [語法]》. 文頭にくる場合は, 常に be 動詞・助動詞の倒置が生じる( →成句 hardly ... when の用例). (2)be 動詞・助動詞に強勢がある場合はその前に置く：“Can you hear him?”“I 〜 cn.”「彼の言うことが聞えていますか」「いや, ほとんど」. (3)付加疑問には肯定文をとる(cf. seldom)： You can 〜 walk, can you? ほとんど歩けないのですね. (4)hardly any (ほとんど…ない)は few [little] よりも意味が強く, no, never よりは弱い. ((略式))ではそれぞれ almost no, almost never が好まれる： There was little, in fact 〜 any time left. 残っている時間は少ししか, いや実はほとんどなかった.
