【語法】 (1) この構文における初めの the は関係副詞で 'by how much' の意, 後の the は指示副詞で 'by so much' の意.　(2) 次のように従節の比較級のあとに that がはいることがある: The older that we get, 〜 wiser we become. 年をとればとるほど賢くなる.　(3) 時に次のように従節を後に表すこともある, この場合しばしば主節の the が落ちる: I play (〜) worse, 〜 more I practice. 練習すればするほどますます下手になる / The situation got worse and worse the 〜 he said. 彼が言えば言うほど事態はますます悪くなった.
