・One must lie on the bed one has made. 《諺》 何事も自業自得.

【語法】 (1) 形式ばった表現法で, 口語体ではこの代わりに we, you, they, people, a person などが用いられる.　(2) この用法の one を受ける代名詞として同じ one, one's, oneself を用いるのは堅苦しいので, 避ける人が多い. 米国では he, she, he or she や口語では they で受ける: One has to put himself in the position of his customers. 客の身になってやらなければならない / If one spoke Chinese and observed Chinese customs, he or she was regarded as civilized by the Chinese. 中国語を話し, 中国の習慣に従った人は中国人に文明人と見られた.　(3) 砕けた文体では you が用いられることもある: One can't be too careful, can you (＝one)? 念には念を入れよということがあるだろう.
